Chapter 5

It took Marissa several tries to log into her beauty channel’s dashboard, but her third attempt was correct. Relieved that she’d remembered, she quickly searched through the drawers in the antique desk on which the access port rested. “That is never happening again,” she muttered as she wrote down her username and password.

The holographic keyboard and mouse took some time to get used to, but once she adjusted to manipulating something that wasn’t really there, the rest was routine. It felt wonderful to immerse herself in the familiar. She’d originally started the vlog out of boredom and the need for a pleasant escape. Well, she’d never needed those things more than right now.

Everything about the past ten days had been challenging and strange. Her companions each brought out different emotions in her. Companions, the word didn’t really fit, but master or owner seemed obscene when she wasn’t naked and on her knees.

The assassination attempt the night before still made her uneasy. She heard people talk about the rebellion, saw newscasts discussing the uprising, but it had never directly involved her before. Darvik’s first instinct had been to protect her. He had been the target of the rebel, yet Darvik literally covered her with his body. And afterward all three had been compassionate and… dare she say sweet?

Was this what Darvik meant by courting? Were they trying to show her what life would be like if she stayed with them beyond her term of service? But stayed with them as what? Mistress? Sexual companion? Lottery girls had no rights. They were basically possessions, so she wouldn’t consider continuing that role. But could she be the pampered mistress of a powerful alien cadre? Ten days ago, it would have been unthinkable. Today, she wasn’t so sure.

She touched her lips and thought of Varren’s kiss. All three of them had kissed her now, and she hadn’t realized how much she missed it until today. That could be because they weren’t distracting her with other pleasures. She sighed. Didn’t they understand that sex was an important part of romantic relationships? Kobar courting seemed ass-backward if you asked her.

“How is it going?”

She glanced to her left and found Shaedon standing in the doorway, hands locked behind his back. “I just got in. I was going to see if there were any legitimate questions. An awful lot of the comments are just snarky nonsense, so I don’t bother responding to those.”

“I’ve heard the others discuss your channel, but I’ve never seen it. Would you give me a guided tour?”

“Of course.” She patted the seat next to her, not seeing any reason to refuse. Even if this was just another game to them, she had to stay here for an entire year. Why not make those months as bearable as possible?

He sat down next to her. His big body made her feel tiny. She clicked over to the main screen for her channel and heard him make an odd sound. She looked at him but couldn’t read his expression.
