Thea dressed and chuckled to herself when she saw Hunter grimace. His clothes sagged and stuck to his skin, no doubt still damp. But she had to cover her mouth to hold back her laughter when he scratched his ass with both hands as he led the charge upstairs. Bursting into the kitchen the group ran to the front door where Bear was roaring his displeasure as if Chaos herself had descended and was standing on the other side.

Thea ran to the dog and pulled on him. “Can’t you get him to stop?”

“Bear, leave it.”

Immediately the dog backed away, stopped barking, and sat.

“Nice,” Gram said. She went to the door and peeked out. “Uh-oh.”

“Uh-oh. What uh-oh?” Thea asked.

Gram pulled back. “Guess the phone tree wasn’t necessary.”

“The Portends?” Carys asked.

“Oh, yes, and lots of them,” Gram said.

“They’re not going to leave, mother,” Carys said. “Let them in.”

Thea jutted her chin at Hunter. “You should leave.”

“I’m not leaving your side until this is done.”

Thea’s face roasted at the image that popped unbidden and decidedly unwanted in her head. Especially after that kiss. Goddess, what had she been thinking? I saw a beautiful, naked man in all his glory. I wanted to taste him, feel his body against mine again, have his hands on me. Preferably everywhere.

She rolled her eyes and opened the door. Then kind of wished she hadn’t.

The front yard was filled with Portends and other paranorms from town. At the door, though, was Rena’s mother, a woman you didn’t cross and live to tell about it.

The Aspis woman bulldozed her way inside, shoving Thea against the wall as she headed for her daughter. “Rena, come home right now.”

“Mom, no, Thea needs me here.”

“Young lady!”

The Aspis pair squared off.

Rena’s chin rose. “I am your daughter, but I make my own way now. I pay my own bills, have my own place, such as it is, and I will not be bullied into doing what you want.”

“You’re not safe here, not with her,” she said, sneering at Thea. “Or him. For goddess’s sake, Thea brought a Hunter here, exposed us all.”

The crowd outside stirred, nodding.

Rena took her Mom’s arm and pulled the woman outside. She released her and stood before the crowd. “Thea did that, but I helped her drag him inside the shield. So if you’re going to blame Thea, you have to blame me too.”

“But he’s a Hunter. He’s here to kill us,” someone shouted.

Thea took a breath and walked outside to stand by Rena and face the people she’d put at risk. “No, he’s not here to kill anyone. In fact, I’ve made a deal with him so he will help us instead of the archangel who sent him.”

“What about the Collector?” another voice shouted.

Hunter joined the women; the crowd grew silent. “He is out there, and he will go after anyone who leaves the protection of the shield.”

The people whispered among themselves. “The Robertsons left town with their travel trailers. We need to warn them.”

“Goddess, I forgot.” Thea turned to Rena.
