As a teenager, Jane wore out her parents’ VCR rewatching the scene that she and Dash were about to perform. Her mother had a crush on Anthony Giles and thought Jane must too, so she indulged the then thirteen-year-old Jane’s obsessive rewatching at first.

It soon grew old. “This scene is not appropriate for a young lady like you to watch for hours every day,” Jane’s mother said.

“Mom! You’re exaggerating. Besides, it’s not the gross parts that interest me.” Jane sprang to her feet from the floor, where she spent much of her TV-watching time. She pointed out feats of acting as the scene unfolded. “See the tensing of Carly’s jaw, Mom? It’s barely there, but if she didn’t tense her jaw, the entire scene would be different. And her eyes? See the way she smiles and hesitates?” A moment later. “She totally takes charge here, but he thinks it’s all him. We know it’s her, though. How?”

Jane’s mother looked uncertainly from the screen to Jane. “She goes in for the kiss?” the older woman tried.

“That’s one clue. What is the other?”

Vernica had had enough. “I don’t know, Jane,” she said irritably. “I need to start dinner. You have five more minutes, then come help me cook.”

It was because of that scene that Jane was the actress she was. She learned all of her tricks at the foot of the TV, thanks entirely to Kennedy James. Her six Emmys: courtesy of Kennedy. Kennedy, who could’ve won more than her eight Emmys but chose to quit working.

Several decades after she watched the scene for the first time, Jane stood in her living room across from Dash Bannon, who appeared rather pale. Once they got going, Jane was confident that Dash would disappear into the world of make believe. It was a Pavlovian reaction to reading a script.

“A surprise blizzard has hit Windsor Beach,” Jane explained. “Carly and Zachary were part of the party searching for a missing girl, but when the sheriff ordered folks to stop searching and go home, Carly and Zachary didn’t take the warning seriously. It didn’t look like such a bad snow was coming. Needless to say, they were wrong. They’ve found refuge in a cave. It’s a big cave, where they can stand up. There isn’t much space to stretch out in, though. At this point, they have yet to kiss. Unconsummated sexual tension is about to come to a climax.”

Dash shivered as if feeling the sexual tension and the biting cold of the blizzard.

“I’m starting,” Jane said. “Wow,” she began, wiping her forehead. “I can’t believe how hot it got.”

Dash glanced at the script, her gaze doing a telltale dance down the page. She froze near the bottom, no doubt at the point where Zachary takes off his shirt.

Oh shit, her expression conveyed, but she got on with it. “Next time, I’ll build a weaker fire,” Dash said.

Jane grimaced. “I really can make a fire. Promise. My hands were too cold to do much.”

“I believe you.” Dash sighed and mimed removing a coat and gloves.
