Shallow Creek (Map 6)
CUTTHROAT
This little tributary to Broad Creek holds tiny Yellowstone cutthroats. Since there’s no trail, access is only by hiking off-trail from Wapiti Lake. You’d be alone, the fish are small, and big bears are a concern, so I would not bother with this one.

Slough (pronounced “sloo”) Creek is a major tributary to the Lamar River, located just north of the Lamar River Bridge on the Cooke City Highway in the northeast corner of Yellowstone Park. Slough Creek arises high in the Beartooth Mountain Range of Montana and enters the park at its north boundary, 11 miles upstream of the Slough Creek Campground. The only access to the creek is via the campground road, and whether you wish to fish upor downstream of the campground, you will have to hike.
To reach the upstream meadows, do not hike the stream up from the campground; it travels through a nasty gorge better suited to rock climbers. Instead, start from the trailhead found about ¼ mile before the campground. Look for a large parking area and trailhead to the upper meadows. Do not be deterred by sometimes dozens of cars parked here, because this is also the access to the private Silver Tip Ranch, located just outside the park’s north boundary. The ranch is permitted to use horse-drawn wagons to carry passengers and supplies because it was in existence before the park was, and this is the wagons’ only access. These wagons are used for ranch purposes only; they do not provide trail rides; please respect their privacy and do not ask.
