Bud stopped. Nails was her ex? Had he just painted a stolen car? And this was the second mention of locoweed he’d seen in the book. Was it some kind of clue?

Marie had a sketch of locoweed, and she’d even apparently dug some up and even ground the calyx into powder. Locoweed was a fairly common plant, but why did she keep mentioning it?

He pulled out his harmonica and began playing, then abruptly stopped and turned on his computer. It was time to do the research he’d been putting off, not really knowing where to start.

He wondered what porphyria was, the disease mentioned in the book. He keyed in the word and read:

Porphyria

Noun: a rare hereditary disease in which the blood pigment hemoglobin is abnormally metabolized. Symptoms include mental disturbances and extreme sensitivity of the skin to light, which leads victims to avoid daylight, hence its historical reference as the vampire disease. There is no known cure.
