She bowed and inserted the paper into the round sake cup in the middle of the table.

The elders drank a toast to her words.

It would take more than a hypocritical prayer, Sumi reflected, to make her cousin pure and perfect. She pulled out her own slip of paper and walked to the table.

“Instead of repeating the same requests from all the previous years, I have chosen two haiku. One of Sodō’s and one of the woman poet Chiyo’s.” She had decided to add the second poem a minute earlier even though she risked a later rebuke from her elders.

“Let’s hear the first,” her father said.

She bowed and read,

My shadow leads me

From the moon’s awesome splendor

To my waiting home
