On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright was piloting the Flyer No. 1 as the brothers made history with the first heavier-than-air plane. They stayed aloft for 59 seconds, covering 852 feet.

The engine roared loudly as it revved up to full power. A group of young boys dove for cover behind a nearby hill, terrified by the sound and uncertain of what was about to happen. With a jolt and the roar of engine and propeller, the Wright Flyer began speeding down the runway. However, just as it gained speed, Wilbur accidentally pulled too hard on the rudder, causing the craft to lurch before landing with a thud. Regardless of his mistake, everything else had worked! Human error was the only hindrance.

Three days later, on the morning of Thursday, December 17, after minor repairs, the Wright brothers readied the Flyer once again. Wilbur and Orville shook hands one last time for luck. This time Orville climbed aboard the aircraft, dressed in a coat, tie, and cap, his mustache blowing in the wind. Few had turned out in the freezing cold of the North Carolina winter.
