CHAPTER FOURTEEN

After freeing her aunt from Angus’s napping body, Madeline joined Fiona at the kitchen sink, drying mugs as Fiona handed them to her.

Fiona handed Madeline the last mug. “The detective’s nice, in an extremely manly sort of way.”

Madeline laughed. “What are you up to?”

“Well, it’d be nice if you had a man in your life again. Although Griff may be a bit tough to live with. I kind of liked that Luiz fellow we ran into at the pub.”

Madeline laughed. “Did you? I kind of liked him too. And I enjoyed talking with him at the café. Though he didn’t say much about his business. I’ve never met a man who doesn’t talk your ears off about his work.”

“Maybe he’s afraid you won’t be impressed, Maddie. You being a professor probably intimidates people. When that English professor came to our book group, the others barely said a word.”

“I guess.”

“How old do you think he is?”

“Probably not much older than I am. But,” she turned to her aunt, “I’m in no rush to get into a relationship. It’s hasn’t even been a year since my divorce from Desmond.”

“Fine, dear. So, what are you doing today besides ignoring all the available men in this town?”

Madeline laughed and lightly thwacked the towel against her aunt’s shoulder. “Staying free for now! And being a mom, even if my teenager doesn’t think she needs me anymore. I want to call Kirsty to see how she’s doing with her midterms. She sounded stressed in her email last night.” Madeline texted her daughter, trying to keep the message light, since her daughter didn’t appreciate anything too mushy. Nineteen was such a challenging age.

“Give her my love and tell her to get on a plane and visit us soon.” Fiona grabbed the dish towel from Madeline and draped it over the oven handle.

“I will. Maybe I’ll send her a plane ticket. I wish she hadn’t picked a university so far away. So, what are you up to today?”

Her aunt patted her hair. “I’ve got to call the salon, see if they can fit me in this afternoon. My curls are drooping and the color fading, like I will be if I don’t get myself gussied up soon.”

Madeline smiled at her aunt. “Gussied or not, Fiona, fading is not in your DNA!”

“You’re a love, sweetie. You want to come with me to the salon? Your curls are getting a bit long.”

Madeline pushed a strand out of her eyes. “They are but I’ll get around to that next week. I hate going to the salon. Maybe I should grow it long and wear it in a ponytail.”

Fiona shook her head. “Not very professorial dear.”

“That may be the case, but it would make it easier to deal with when I do field work. Anyway, I want to see if I can find out more about Angus.”

“What do you mean?”

“If he came from a breeder, perhaps they’ll be able to tell me who bought him.” Madeline reached under the dish cabinet to hang the three mugs on their hooks.
