Chapter Six

Tansy

“Does the coroner know how she died yet?”

“I should hear by this afternoon.” Nathan finishes his coffee. “I know Anna and Milton are enjoying the grandkids, but not having our coroner right now is slowing things down.”

Anna and Milton Tate are the former coroner and sheriff of the town. Thanks to my knack for finding bodies, we’ve spent a lot of time together. They are sweet and definitely missed.

“Did you tell them what happened?”

“I did since they were around when it all started. I can’t believe it’s all coming full circle. How are you doing, by the way?”

“I’m okay. I wish Sally and I had talked before she died, but there’s nothing I can do about that now. We just need to figure out who put her in that wall.”

“How about I figure out who did it, and you finish planning the wedding?”

I shrug, not answering because I know he’s right, and he knows I’ll keep digging. It’s our nonverbal way of compromising. Or maybe it’s more of agreeing to disagree.

His phone rings. “Sheriff Kline.”

I turn my back and grin. I still love hearing that. At first, I thought he would turn down the position. Since he was younger than the sheriffs in surrounding towns, he was nervous, but all of Pine Ridge supported him, making the decision easier. I can’t believe that, soon, I will be married to a sheriff, or even married at all. It certainly wasn’t something I’d thought would ever happen. I’d never really been lucky in love.

“Okay, thank you. I appreciate you rushing it. Yes, please. Thanks again.”

The coroner’s report might have come in sooner than he thought. That’s good. It will give him something to go on.

“Was that the coroner?”

“It was. Now I feel a bit bad for complaining. He rushed it through, knowing our wedding is coming up, so I could worry about other things.” He smirks. “He’s never met you. There are zero reasons for me to worry when I have you.”

“Ha-ha. You’re funny. What did he say?”

“It looks like she was stabbed in the back of the neck.”

“Stabbed? Really?”

“That’s not the interesting part. A piece of a fountain pen nib is still stuck in the wound.”

“Fountain pen? Why is that… oh, wow.” I step back, mouth open. “Her favorite pen was a fountain pen.”

“And it’s missing.”

My mind is whirling at a million miles an hour. “What else is missing? The book that I have.”

“The scarf that showed up at Calvin’s. The fountain pen.”

“A cast-iron skillet and a book-shaped doorstop.”

Nathan shakes his head. “The last two could do a lot of damage.”

“You have to figure out if there’s a connection between Calvin and Sally. There has to be. Why else would he end up with the scarf?”

“One step ahead of you. Thomas is heading out there this morning, but I don’t know what it could be. And the connection to you?”

I sigh. “Other than the Duncan issue, there isn’t one. We only spoke a few times, and we were cordial. Back to Calvin.
