Chapter Twenty-Four
Erica managed to get through the rest of the day without any more drama.
They were several days into a murder investigation, though, and she still didnât have any solid suspects. The search on the dropshipping premises was ongoing, but they hadnât found anything yet. Even if they did find what they were looking for, Luke Heale might be guilty of intent to supply, but that didnât make him a murderer. Even he wouldnât be stupid enough to bring that much attention to his business unnecessarily by pinning a manâs body to the railings.
During the interview, which DI Julian Colgan had led, Heale had insisted there were no gangs or other competitors that heâd had a run-in with who might have left poor Taylor Quigleyâs body as a message. He denied that Taylor had ever bought drugs from him, but Erica still suspected the young man had been heading that way in order to score. Had someone followed him and seen their opportunity?
Or was Luke Heale lying to save his own arse?
The CCTV from Healeâs business hadnât shown anything either. With the cameras pointed in the opposite direction of the murder, and that Heale only had them running during the hours he wasnât thereâmost likely to protect his own neck than anything elseâthey hadnât made any further progress.
It was incredibly frustrating.
If only they had Taylorâs phone. She was sure it would have a wealth of information on it, but so far it hadnât turned up. Sheâd also heard from digital forensics, and though theyâd managed to get into the laptop, it didnât look as though there was anything incriminating on it.
Hannah Rudd approached her desk. âBoss, Iâve been going through all the past orders from the dropshipping business and searched Taylorâs name and address, and this came up.â
She pushed a sheet of paper under Ericaâs nose. Several lines had been highlighted. âThatâs Taylorâs address, right? Itâs not his full name, but itâs enough to know those packages were intended for him.â
Erica scanned the list. Taylor had been ordering items from Heale every other week for the past few months.
âHow many pairs of socks does one person need?â she commented.
âExactly. I bet it wasnât only socks that were in the package.â
âGood work, Hannah. Did I tell you that Iâm going to miss you?â
Hannah grinned. âBy the sound of things, youâre not going to be here to miss me.â
âOh, true, though only for a short while.â
They had something linking Heale to Taylor now, but that still didnât mean Heale had been the one to kill him. She glanced over to where Shawn was at his desk, and her stomach clenched. There was a new kind of tension between them, and she wished she could make everything go back to how they had been. She got the feeling they werenât going to be playing happy families when they got home tonight.
