Prior opened his eyes and blinked; a bright light which seemed to come from everywhere bored into his brain and made him screw his eyes shut again; but the light seemed to be inside his head as well. He felt himself floating, drifting backwards and forwards as if rocked in a cradle, and then all was still.

He tried to move his body but nothing happened; his limbs refused to answer the nervous impulses from his brain. Did he even have a body?, he thought wildly, but he could not move his head to look down. He opened his eyes again and all he could see was that blinding light, a low, orange radiance that blotted out everything else. He realised his spectacles were gone, and without them everything was a blur, like one of those modern paintings they showed in the new Pavilion on the front.

He squinted, and looked again; in the distance a figure was approaching. An old man, with a white beard, wearing a long white cloak and carrying a shepherd’s crook was walking towards him, with the light radiating from behind his head like the art-deco sunburst designs one saw on the front of wireless sets or on garden gates.

The man stopped, and looked down quizzically at Prior.

‘Are you all right, son?’ he said.

Prior blinked. He saw other figures hurrying towards him, as if from nowhere. Were they angels? He tried to speak and his voice croaked; finally he got the words out, but to his amazement, there was no stammer.

‘Am I…am I in heaven?’ he asked.

‘No son,’ said the man, and bent down in front of him. Prior realised the white robe was a pale coloured mackintosh, and the shepherd’s crook a walking stick.

‘It’s the next best place though,’ chuckled the man. ‘You’re in Lowestoft.’
