Chapter 12

The Ye Olde Lobster Shack is like being transported back in time to a simpler era, where the scent of homemade cooking fills the air, and the sound of friendly chatter creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The restaurant, located on the busy downtown wharf, offers a picturesque backdrop of Sunrise Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean. Adorned with vintage nautical décor and traditional red leather booths, the dining area radiates Maine nostalgia, welcoming locals, and visitors alike. The worn wood paneling and cozy checkered tablecloths add to the inviting ambiance.

The friendly staff, many of whom have been part of the community for years, are always ready to provide exceptional service with a warm smile. They are experts at making you feel right at home, whether you’re a familiar face or a first-time visitor.

Without a doubt, it is the delicious food made with the freshest local ingredients, including lobster caught that day, that has earned The Shack its impeccable reputation.

“This isn’t just a Lobster Shack, Cyrus, your Maine lobster bisque, could rival any fancy restaurant in New York! I am bringing my husband back in the fall. He’ll love this place,” exclaimed Alice as she took another spoonful of creamy, rich, flavorful broth.

“It’s the touch of brandy our cook uses.” Cyrus’ eyes reflected the pride he felt for his restaurant.

“The lobster salad is divine,” Kathleen complimented. “I’ve never tasted lobster so fresh and juicy. I am asking myself why I waited so long to visit Maine.”

“Stop now, please. You’re making me blush. Ye Olde Lobster Shack was really a dream of my mother’s. It never became a reality for her. I started working on our family’s lobster boat as a young child, probably around six. My father died of a heart attack while we were out pulling in traps when I was twelve. I left school at thirteen to work on the boat full time. In the evening, Mom would talk about what our restaurant would look like. She started a recipe box of her creations. Those recipes are the main stay items we serve today. My goal has always been to honor the memory of my mother and make her proud.” Cyrus wiped his eyes with his napkin.

“See why I love this man with all my heart? Our love of family and family traditions are very similar. I grew up on a square mile farm in Nebraska. My brother Arthur, Sara’s father, fell in love with a young woman who lived in Ohio. With our family’s blessing, Arthur moved to Ohio and raised his family. My father died of a heart attack in his late forties. Mom and I worked on the farm together. Eventually, we hired a manager to help because it was becoming too much for two women to run alone. When Mom passed, I took over the farm, and it became my life. My great-grandmother was an amazing baker. She also created her own recipes and kept them locked away in a tin box. Those recipes have been handed down from generation to generation.
