So I actually watched this film (Mulholland Dr.) for the first time FOR this essay. I would’ve seen it sooner, but I skipped the day we were supposed to watch it at NYU and then spent the rest of the semester nodding my head during lectures VERY confidently. But, it came back to haunt me at the ripe old age of twenty-five and, surprisingly, I related to it? LYNCH! PLOT! TWIST!

At first glance, Mulholland Dr. has a LOT going on. This also happens on second, third, and fourth glance. Every glance. So I decided to focus on what I found the most relatable/disturbing, which was Diane’s clear deterioration of mental health. Just to give you a recap, so we’re all on the same page (literally lol), although I assume you know this movie if you are reading this, Rita and Betty become friends after Rita (aka Camilla) shows up at Betty’s house (aka Diane) after an accident on Mulholland Drive (Whoa! It’s the movie title!). They try solving the mystery of Rita’s accident together and also end up totally hooking up (high fives, David Lynch). Anyways, point is, there are a bunch of “sides” to each “character.” But for me, as a young bipolar woman who is stellar at putting up a cheery front, the Betty-versus-Diane of it all made complete sense. Who you wish you were (Mania) versus who you hate you are (Depression). Camilla struck me as the stoker of Mania, if not just a complete physicalization of it.

The interesting thing about manic episodes is, they get you in just as much trouble as your depressive ones. You’re reckless, you don’t think about consequences, you’re embarrassing. Sure, you’re not trying to kill yourself (intentionally), but that coke binge could definitely lead to an unwanted death and, at the very least, an extreme amount of credit card debt.

However, when seeking treatment for your mental health, you find yourself missing your mania. It was fun! It was the Rita to your Diane! Regular You is walking around your apartment in a grody terry-cloth robe (or, in my case, workout clothes, because I’ve convinced myself I will always go to SoulCycle to get out of my depressive episode, but never actually go, therefore ending up in a downward spiral of yoga pants and denial), but when you’re with RITA you’re gorgeous and perky with glossy hair and amazing tits! It’s no wonder Diane is obsessed with that relationship. But ultimately, extreme passion (even the good kind) leads to destruction and exhaustion. Just like with Mania, the relationship with Rita can’t stay good forever. It’s tumultuous and causes more trouble than it’s worth.

Most bipolar people come to a point where they realize they have to break up with Mania. Maybe it’s after a particularly crazy night out, maybe it’s after a shopping spree, maybe you even OD. I never had a “rock bottom”—or I guess for Mania it would be called “cloud nine top”—moment, but you can only bid
