20. Using a firm pressure of his thumb, Lucchesi models the upper eye area and indicates the line of the eyebrow.

21. With an oval-shaped wire-end tool, he plucks a ball of clay out of the eyeball to make the dark part of the eye, or iris.

22. Here Lucchesi draws a flexible plastic palette, cut from the bottom of a discarded container, over the surface to blend the clay and define the planes of the face.

23. He pulls the palette down the cheek to the throat with a steady pressure of his fingertips, “spreading” the clay over the surface.
