Chapter Twenty-Two

Tuesday, March 25, 1943

11:49 p.m.

Secret Service Safe House, Glen Echo, Virginia

Helen Meeker was in no nonsense mood as she moved to a secured, windowless bedroom at the rear of a century-old, two story-brick home a mile outside of Glen Echo, Virginia. For the past five years, the structure had been used as hiding place for those testifying in high-profile federal cases. Tonight, it was serving as a prison.

“Well, Helen, I didn’t expect visitors at this time of night.”

The woman Meeker knew as Joan Fischer was dressed in two-piece, man-style, green and white-striped pajamas. Her blonde hair was pulled into a ponytail. While she was sitting in bed, her eyes showed no signs of having been asleep.

“Who are you?” Meeker demanded as she slammed the door.

“You know that answer.”

“Okay, if I do, then answer this question. Who did you escort around Germany for Zeigermann when you were a college intern?”

“Lots of people.”

“This one actually met Hitler in his office.”

“Once again …”

“Don’t give me that,” Meeker yelled, “a college student doesn’t get access to Hitler on a regular basis. Who was it?”

“I don’t like your attitude,” Fischer countered.

“You’ll like it less in a few minutes.” She reached into her bag and pulled out a photo. “Who is this woman?”

Fischer barely looked at the image. “The Queen of Sheba.”

“Is that the best you’ve got?”

“How I’m I supposed to know who it is?”

“Because Joan Fischer showed this woman around Germany in 1934 and even took her into Hitler’s office. And, as you don’t know who she is, that means you aren’t whom you claim to be.”

“Let me see it again,” she paused, “I think I remember now. This was a member of the party. She was …”

Meeker waved to cut her off. “Not even close. So, who are you and where is Joan Fischer?”

The prisoner turned toward a side wall and pouted. She continued to study wallpaper until Meeker broke the silence.

“I asked you a question.”

“Fischer is dead,” the woman finally announced as she turned to once more face Meeker.

“How do you know that?”

“Because, a friend of yours was the one who killed her. I watched him do it. If you want the details talk to Hans Holsclaw.”

Meeker nodded. That actually made a bit of sense. Holsclaw might have been assigned to take out one of the SS’s killing machines. It fits with what she knew of the man and his work. But she needed more to actually believe the tale this woman was starting to spin.

“Spill with the details.”

“Holsclaw had been keeping tabs on Fischer. He found out she was going to be sent to the United States, and you were the target. He organized a raid on the small inn she was staying in. She was waiting to be transported to the United States with Banner and Mulschin. He wanted to capture her, but she resisted. Rather than mourn a plan that had failed, he came up with another one. He figured Banner and Mulschin didn’t know Fischer. They likely knew she was blonde and beautiful, but very little else.
