Chapter 21
Despite his hangover (Malcolm had insisted on buying them both shots of local whisky before calling it a night), Jasper forced himself to get up early. He was eager to move his investigation forward. The information heâd gleaned from the local drinkers was intriguing, but he needed something more concrete to have a chance of tracking down Callum Kirk.
He located the Murray farm on an Ordnance Survey map of Islay heâd brought with him from London. It was less than two miles from Port Ellen, so he decided to walk there and try to clear his head in the morning air. Although it was summer, there was a chill in the air at this time of day. The island looked lush in the morning sunshine. The long tufts of grass looked lustrous and green in some places and mustard yellow in others where they were touched by rays from the rising sun. Brown hills and stony cliffs stood out against a pale blue sky that was mostly free of clouds.
The farmhouse was at the end of a long mud track. The hairs on the back of Jasperâs neck stood up as he walked down the winding path. He looked over his shoulder several times, unable to shake the feeling that he was being watched.
When he reached the farmhouse, he got the impression that no-one was living there. The building was dark. Spider webs covered the wing mirrors of the old Land Rover parked in the drive. No-one answered the door when Jasper knocked. He walked all around the house, peering through the windows. It looked lived in, but there was no sign anyone was there now. All the doors were locked. What the barflies had saidâthat Murray had died a few months earlier, leaving his estate in limboâseemed to be true.
The feeling he was being watched got stronger as he stared through the kitchen window. He turned around in a slow circle. There was no-one nearby that he could see, but there was something strange about the murmuring wind that blew across the farm.
Jasper had given little credence to Malcolmâs drunken warning that evil spirits infested Murrayâs farm, but now he wondered if he might be right after all. Although they couldnât see ghosts with the naked eye, wizards were more attuned to the spirit world than mundanes and could usually sense paranormal activity if it was intense enough and close enough.
Jasper conjured a ball of werelight. At first it cast a purplish light, but it turned silver as Jasper twisted his hand. He drew some extra power from his ruby brooch and fed it into the silver werelight. The ball floated a few feet above his head and flared brighter.
The silver werelight revealed several figures standing within a few hundred yards. They were translucent, blurring away at the edges, like smoke trapped in glass bottles. They were all staring in Jasperâs direction. A ripple of fear passed through him, but he stood his ground and told himself not to panic.
