Chapter 17

When I opened my eyes, I found Argo staring down at me and Storm standing on my chest. The coolness of the frozen ground I lay on focused my senses. I was back in my world and time. Thank god. But ouch! My head hurt.

“Finally.” Storm lowered her back legs to my belly and began licking her side. “I was beginning to wonder if we should get the elf.”

“I told her we needed to wait. You’d just traveled through time and worlds and you would need time to recover.” Argo’s hot breath warmed my face.

“Did I really travel through time and worlds?” I rubbed my head as it felt like it was going to explode.

“Yes.” Both my companions responded in unison.

“Elven magic is very powerful.” Argo sniffed my face. “Don’t try to get up for a while until your spirit settles back into your body.”

It took another hour until the pressure inside my head lessened enough that I could sit up and then another thirty minutes after that until I could stand. It was only then that Argo dropped the barrier I’d erected before I took the potion. Both Storm and Argo walked next to me. Daylight streamed through the thick conifer canopy above us, lighting the path to the cabin.

“How long have I been out?” I swallowed the burn I now noticed.

“From the time you took the potion? I’d say several hours. It’s past noonday.” Argo replied.

“Yeah, I’m ready to go hunting and you should too.” Storm said.

But before I could respond, Padrick swept in and gathered me into his arms.

“Thank the goddess.” He sighed.

He squeezed me so tight I could barely speak. “So you don’t hate me anymore?”

He let out a laugh and lifted his head until our eyes met. “Oh, I had several millennia to hate you properly, but the moment you were born, and I lifted you into your mother’s arms, I knew I would do whatever it took to keep you alive.”

“You were there?” My jaw dropped.

“Of course. It was my job.”

I swallowed. “Did you kill Eva before or after I was born?”

The question hung in the air for what felt like hours. He hung his head for a moment before returning his gaze to my eyes.

“I never wanted to kill her. But I had taken a blood oath from the King of Transpatia to kill the witch. When I fulfilled my oath, I could return to Transpatia and resume my duties in the palace.” He let go of me and stepped back. “I’m not proud of that choice, but it seemed that Eva already knew it would happen and she was grateful that it would be me and not Octavian to take her.”

“But why?” I shook my head. “You loved her. You even called her spirit. So why take an oath to kill her?”

He blew a whistle. “This could take a while. Let’s get you some blood and then we can discuss the rest inside the cabin by the fire.”

“Absolutely not. I’m tired of getting my questions dodged.
