Owyn hadnât eaten much more than hardtack and dried meat in some time, so the thought of a bowl of hot stew was certainly appealing. His stomach rumbled loudly, but he knew he couldnât trust this witch, no matter how her food smelled.
âWell, if youâre going to just stand there,â the witch muttered as she turned her back to him. âExcuse me, princess,â she said in mocking tones. âDinner is almost ready.â
The princess turned to face the witch, eyeing her with pure hatred, and Owyn finally got a good look at her. Even with her eyes red from weeping and her hair disheveled, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
Her hair was red like a sunset and fell in waves down her back and framed an oval face with eyes like emeralds. Her lips, though twisted into a scowl at the moment, were full and pink. The thin shift she wore had seen better days, but it left little to the imagination; large, round breasts topped with pink nipples were plainly visible through it, as was her slender waist and flat stomach.
âI hope you choke on your fucking stew and rot,â the princess said, her tone full of venom.
âAnd after all Iâve done for you,â Valdis muttered, gesturing again.
Freya shrieked as she was lifted into the air by an unseen force and deposited unceremoniously onto the floor next to the cauldron. She rubbed her bottom and clambered to her feet, glaring at the witch.
Owyn, noticing that the witch was no longer facing him, decided to take advantage of her inattention. He snatched his dagger from its sheath on his forearm and hurled it at her. It flew true, sinking all the way to the hilt in the witchâs back with enough force to knock a bull over.
She didnât even flinch. No blood spread from the wound. Owynâs brows drew down as he realized how difficult this was going to be. It was going to require all of his cunning.
âHave you gotten all those urges out now?â Valdis asked Owyn as she handed a bowl of stew to the princess. Princess Freya took the bowl with a sharp glare and went back to the bed, where she sat down and started eating.
Owynâs mind suddenly went back to the last conversation he had with the court wizard. Her heart resides outside of her body. Destroy that, and she will be vulnerable.
âDid Uthar send you, or Ivar?â Valdis asked, still ignoring the dagger in her back. She turned to Owyn and stood there with her hands on her hips, waiting on his reply. The point of his dagger stuck out from beneath one of her collarbones.
âKing Ivar sent me, although Uthar helped,â Owyn said, eyeing her warily.
The witchâs low-cut dress made it hard to focus on anything else. Her beauty was so great that his mind kept focusing on her instead of the dire situation he was in. A tiny voice in the back of his head screamed at him to resist, but his eyes drank in her figure.
