CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Lex was grateful for the cooling air of the evening as she walked to Mr. Cromwellâs house. It made her sharper, gave her time to think.
To think about exactly what, if anything, she was going to be accusing Mr. Cromwell of.
A shy and retiring man who couldn't even allow himself to be seen by others didn't seem like the most obvious candidate to be a murderer. Of course, there was always the possibility that he had been seen by someone who he did not want to see him and reacted in fear or rage. But even then, Lex had never gotten that kind of vibe from the mysterious customer. No, he seemed like a harmless man, just impossibly shy to a painful extent.
Which was only going to make this harder, of course. And when he had learned the book had been sold, Mr. Cromwell had seemed to change completely. Heâd basically shouted at Montgomery, almost as if he had become a different person. Lex had no way to know which version of him she was going to come up against.
But still, if there was going to be a way to talk to him and to figure out exactly what it was that had happened here, Lex needed to take it. Not just for her reputation, not just for the reputation of Montgomery and A Curious Bookstore, but so that she could be free to go and do what really mattered.
To find her dad.
She hesitated outside the building. Mr. Cromwell lived just on the outskirts of Incanton, on a street that was not as heavily populated as the others. In fact, his nearest neighbors were across a couple of vacant lots, giving him the isolation that seemed to fit his personality exactly. She knocked on the door before her ambition could fail her, trying to tell herself that she was in control and that she could get him to talk.
If she didn't believe it, then he was never going to either.
There was a long wait, and Lex was almost about to knock on the door again when she finally heard a quiet creak behind it. It was as though someone had stood on one of the floorboards, while trying to creep up to the door as closely and as silently as possible without being detected. She had a feeling that she was being watched, and she looked up at the small round pinhole in the door. Though she couldn't see anything on the other side, of course, she was almost certain that the homeâs resident was there.
âMr. Cromwell,â Lex said, keeping her voice soft and gentle. âItâs me â Alexis Blair, from A Curious Bookstore. I know we havenât spoken directly before, but Iâm trying to help out Montgomery and clear our names. Itâs about the book you tried to buy from us â have you heard about what happened?â
There was a small shuffling sound from behind the door. âWait there,â Mr. Cromwell said, his voice high and nervous. Lex
