CHAPTER NINETEEN

Lex chewed her lip nervously, flexing her hands on the steering wheel, as she tried to keep close behind the man on his way through the twisting turns of Incanton’s town center, mindful all the while that she couldn’t get too close in case he realized he was being followed.

She tried to envisage him, from the brief view she’d had in the inn and the glance she got now and then of his rearview mirror. He was tall and well-built, with broad shoulders that seemed to stretch his T-shirt. She’d only seen his face from the side, but his head and chin were both clean-shaven. He looked strong.

Was he strong enough to strangle a man to death with his bare hands?

It was more than possible. And if he led her somewhere now because he was handing off the stolen book, Lex would have him bang to rights. So long as he didn’t realize she was following him and try to keep her quiet, that was.

It occurred to Lex, as they drove through the town center, past the central parking lot where tourists and shoppers left their cars as they strolled the shorefront, that he could be heading anywhere. He could lead her back to Boston. Or to an airport. Or he could be about to drive across the country for the next two days straight.

It didn’t matter. She would follow him as far as she could—until she knew it was or wasn’t him. And if he was fleeing the scene right after the police left, then surely it had to be him. With those strong arms and the fact that he was staying in the inn alone, he had to be the only viable suspect!

Lex ducked her head as they stopped at a red light on the outskirts of Incanton, and then was deliberately slow in setting off when it changed so that she could hang back. She trailed behind the other car, keeping her eyes fixed on him, until he finally slowed and then turned into a property at the side of the road some five minutes out of the town proper.

Lex’s heart thumped in her chest and she bit her lip as she drove right past the turning, keeping her eyes trained on him as much as she could. He’d stopped his car outside a house that was half covered in scaffolding, and was now getting out, keys in hand. Her stomach dropped. What could she do? If she pulled in after him, he would see her—but if she carried on, she might miss the moment…

She threw caution to the wind for a moment and pulled up on the side of the road, opening her glove compartment and leaning over so that she could pretend to be looking for something if he came to see who she was. All the while, she looked in her wing mirror, watching his distorted image as he approached the front door.

“Hey, love!”

That was a woman, coming around from the back of the property with a piece of paper shading her eyes against the sun.
