As soon as I turned into the driveway, I saw the bright red banners attached to my scarecrowâs hands. They flapped in the breeze like grotesque appendages dipped in blood.
Taking Halley with me, I walked across the lawn in a rustle of leaves and read the words emblazoned on the material. One said âDangerâ and the other âDeathâ. The letters were black and jagged like the writing on the gravestone.
The demented prankster had struck again, on another Saturday when I was away from home. That meant he knew Iâd be out this morning. Or maybe not. He could simply have chosen a time when the car was gone.
Trying to hold my anger in check, I ripped the banners off the scarecrow and went inside with Halley where I threw them in the trash. This was another Halloween trick, less disturbing than the first because it didnât directly involve my dog, but nonetheless upsetting. The invasion was personal, almost a physical blow.
I poured Halley a fresh drink, letting the sound of running water soothe me. By this time next week, the Devilâs holiday would be in the past, and all R.I.P. stones and hellish accessories would be packed away for another season. But Danger and Death were never far away.
Who besides Addie Everett wished me ill?
Through the kitchen window, I glanced at the yellow Victorian, quiet and serene in the afternoon sunlight. If Camille had seen anything amiss, she would have left me a note or a message on my answering machine. Sheâd be on my porch right now, rapping on the door.
Still, I could ask her...
From inside my purse, the cell phone shrilled. I listened to four rings, wishing I didnât have to answer it. What if the unseen visitor was calling with a verbal warning?
Well, then Iâd know who threatened me.
The receiver felt warm, but my hands were suddenly cold. Keeping my voice steady, I said, âHello?â and waited.
âHey, Jennet. Good news.â
âBrent?â Only Brentâin a congenial mood. I took a deep breath and sank into a chair.
âSure. Who else? Itâs tonight at the Cauldron. Weâll leave around seven so we can have some private time before dinner. Just the two of us.â
âYou lost me,â I said.
âTyler Blakeley. Remember? He agreed to meet us at eight.â
âThat was fast.â
âWhen I say Iâll do something, itâs done. So Iâll pick you up. Say at six forty-five?â
Heâd just said seven. âWaitâno.â
âYou didnât change your mind, did you?â A barely discernible edge crept into the congeniality.
âNo, itâs just...â Brent driving me to the Cauldron would be too much like a date. âIâll take my own car and meet you. I have a few errandsâthat is, choresâto do first. Iâm not sure when I can get away.â
âWhatever you say, but donât be late. Weâll have dinner there.â
âThat sounds good. Thanks for finding Tyler so quickly.â
âMy pleasure, maâam.â
âGoodbye,â I said, but he had already hung up.
When properly motivated, Brent was remarkably efficient. I wished I could turn the mystery of the Halloween trickster over to his capable hands.
