Shamrock as trinity

A common story maintains that St. Patrick, in an effort to explain the holy trinity to ignorant Druids, turned to the shamrock. Each leaf represented one aspect of a single God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The Druids were said to be so moved by this manifestation of God in nature that Christianity spread as far and wide as the shamrock itself. In reality, the Druids were already quite familiar with the power of trinities and triads and subsequently regarded the shamrock with due respect. The shamrock was also highly valued as a symbol of fertility, as it grew so easily.
