WE GOT TO the Chang compound by nightfall. Tony used the same teleportation magic he’d used to get to my place with us, handing us each one of his cards. My head went light and there was darkness, and then we were standing in front of the Chang compound.

I called Chuck. If there was anyone who could get us an audience with my grandmother with no fuss, it was her.

“That’s weird,” I said. “She’s not picking up.”

“But Chuck never turns off her phone,” Tony said. I wondered at their relationship. I felt like I’d been kept in the dark about it, but then the family lawyer wasn’t exactly a topic that came up often. Were they something more than friends? I found myself snarling against it. Chuck was an adult, but she was far too young for Tony. But then again, this was only my speculation, so I held my tongue against my questions, crushed them against my teeth.

“Are we going in, or what?” Salim asked. “We don’t exactly have all day.”

No, we had exactly three days. With this day lost to finding the seals, that meant we had two days to find the Lord of the city. Meanwhile, the city could still get destroyed by demons scouring it for us and the Lord of the city.

“Salim, really, are you okay?” He had dark circles under his eyes and it looked like he had lost weight, the bones of his face standing out more sharply than they had even this morning.

“I’m fine.”

“You can’t just pretend to be fine,” I said. “You’ll only hold us up.”

“Spoken like a true Chang.”

I drew myself up, both taken aback and angry. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means,” my grandmother said from beside us, “that you should come in and tell me what you need or go away.” She looked at Salim. “His kind is not welcome in my home, though.”

And that was exactly what he meant. I chewed the inside of my cheek to stop myself from saying anything. “Fine,” I bit out. “Salim, stay here.”

“Of course,” he said with a genteel sneer. As though I had any other choice. I chose to ignore him.

I stepped into my grandmother’s house with some trepidation, Tony taking the rear. To be honest, I had never actually been inside. No, we had always conducted our business at one of the cousins’ houses or at family gatherings. Despite this, I felt her wards welcome me as one of their own with a surprising amount of enthusiasm. Knowing what I did about wards, I didn’t mention it to her.

The inside of her house was as normal as could be, wards aside. There was an upright piano in the living room. No TV. And there were books. Books lined the wall that sectioned the living room off from the rest of the dining room. The sliding door to my right was slightly ajar and led to what looked like another sitting room. In my observations, I’d overlooked my grandmother. At a full head smaller than me, she was thin and frail looking, but I knew she had fire in her.
