The moon hid behind thick clouds. The forest was dark and silent. Remy preferred it that way, alone in the darkness of the woods. She could still see enough to navigate through it when most human eyes could not. That made her safe. No fae came to this little town. It wasn’t a main thoroughfare, and they didn’t trade in any fine goods. Witches hardly passed through either.

Even the rabbits seemed to think they were safe in the stillness of the night. They had all come out of hiding. It was almost too easy to catch them, but Remy stopped at three, not wanting to waste her handmade arrows.

She tied the rabbits’ feet together with a cord and carried on through the woods. She could see the old mill looming through the thick branches. It had been abandoned long ago, and the forest had surged up to reclaim it. Weeds and shrubs grew across its floors. Vines twined through open windows. It was the sort of place that humans feared and witches loved. But Edgar would venture out here even if he was afraid, his manhood overriding his sense of danger.

When Remy entered the large bottom floor of the mill, she tossed the rabbits and her bow and quiver on the dusty table. A nesting bat flew out into the night from above her. Remy huffed a laugh. Of course there would be a bat. The occult animals didn’t seem to understand that witches liked to keep a low profile nowadays.

She reached under her skirt and slipped off her underpants, tucking them into her pocket. Sliding herself up onto a workbench top behind her, she waited.

Edgar was early too. She saw his flickering candle approaching through the woods. It made Remy chuckle. This human man trudging sightlessly through the forest to get to her, it made her feel powerful.

“Remy?” Edgar whispered into the darkness of the mill.

“Here,” Remy called back making Edgar whirl around.

He stumbled blindly forward into the wooden table. Reaching out to steady himself, he placed his hand down right on top of a dead rabbit.

“Gah!” he barked, startling backwards.

“I told Fenrin I’d bring home dinner,” Remy snickered.

Edgar held the candle higher and finally found her there.

“There you are, you little temptress.” He grinned, making his way over to her and placing the candle beside her.

He bunched the fabric of her skirt into his fists and pulled her to him so her legs wrapped around his waist. Remy encircled her hands around his neck and pulled him into a kiss. He tasted like ale and mint leaves. He probably picked them along the way to hide his foul breath. Remy didn’t really care much for kissing. It was too smelly and wet. Edgar’s tongue pushed into her mouth, and she allowed it for a moment before turning her head into his shoulder and kissing his neck. It was an acceptable form of escape.

Edgar slid his hands under Remy’s skirt and up her bare thighs. He groaned as his thumb brushed through the hair between her legs, finding her already bare for him.
