After Thea told Brandon what the Expert said, Brandon could not stop thinking about it. Someone in that damn cult had a charm powerful enough to kill people in their dreams. Probably Fouche, if they had to guess, though Brandon wondered if other powers were at work inside the cult. They wouldn’t find out until they went to that stupid ball.

First, ancient poetry plays with Jax, then masquerade balls with Thea. What had his work life turned into?

Brandon thought over the Expert’s words all the way to the local community center after work that day. This was the location Mia had suggested for training the hedge witches. Neutral ground. They wanted to make their trainees comfortable since AID agents were not the witches’ favorite people.

He pulled into the parking lot and got out, checking his watch. Maybe Jax is late because of traffic. He waited several minutes. but still, no sign of the older man. Finally, Brandon was about to give up and go inside when a car pulled into the parking lot and screeched to a halt.

Jax emerged from his car with an expression that suggested tonight might not go well. “I’m not particularly happy with you, Brandon Cole. If this is all a part of an effort to save me or some bullshit…” He trailed off, and Brandon noticed a slight glimmer in his eyes.

Jax wasn’t as stiff as usual. He was glad to be there despite the tough guy act he put on. Well, it wouldn’t work with Brandon. He had dealt with Jax’s type before, back when he was training to be in the FBI. With AID, things were different since they were dealing with magic. Still, guys like Jax always turned up.

“What?” Brandon returned. “Afraid these girls will beat your ass?”

Jax growled something that Brandon didn’t quite hear, then the two went inside.

Brandon quickly counted the number of people in the gym. Eighteen, including Thea, Mia, and Kira, who was in cat form as usual. Most of the hedge witches were women, though a few men attended as well. None of them had gotten the memo about what to wear, if the memo had been sent in the first place. The women wore long skirts unfit for combative training. The men wore cloaks and funny-looking hats.

This isn’t a Ren faire, Brandon thought. What the hell were they thinking? Then it hit him. Thea had told these people to show up wearing whatever was normal for them. In a situation where they needed to defend themselves, they would probably be wearing their skirts and cloaks, not tactical gear. He reminded himself this wasn’t training for operative situations. They were here to teach the hedge witches how to get out of a scrape if they found themselves in one.

Brandon surveyed them with a look that probably wasn’t the most friendly. Thea had warned him about his resting bitch face several times. RBF syndrome, she called it. He remembered that now and put on a smile. “Hello, all. I’m glad you could make it.
