Chapter Eleven

Shannon and Rodney Jenkins arrived two days later, ready to give the inn its maiden voyage, so to speak. The picture I’d painted in my head didn’t quite match the reality. The couple who greeted Adam and me at the door were likely close to the same age as Adam’s parents, but where Bella and Mort were hard lines, impeccable attire, and stern expressions, Shannon and Rodney were soft, warm, and casual. Both of them embraced Adam with an exchange of friendly greetings.

“Holly, this is Shannon and Rod,” he said, gesturing at me. “And this is Holly Boldt, my fiancé.”

“It’s so nice to meet you, Holly,” Shannon said, vigorously shaking my hand between both of hers.

Rod offered me his hand next.

“Likewise,” I replied, a little bowled over at their welcoming manner.

“You two look even cuter together than the pictures,” Shannon gushed. “Bella and Mort keep that one from your Christmas card right on the mantle in the formal living room. Your children are going to be so beautiful!”

Rodney chuckled and put a hand on his wife’s shoulder. “Don’t rush them, Shanny. They’re young.”

Shannon smiled. “Oh, I know. You just don’t want to wait too long. The time goes so quickly. One minute they’re in diapers, and the next, they’re moving off to college.” A glossy sheen coated her bright blue eyes and she blinked a few times.

“We just sent our youngest off to college this last year,” Rodney explained, his hand still resting on his wife’s shoulder. “He called the other day to tell us he got a job and he’s not coming home for the summer break as we’d planned.”

“Oh.” I gave Shannon a sympathetic smile. “That’s hard.”

“What’s Kit studying?” Adam asked, ushering the couple into the manor.

Rod reached for the two suitcases, but Adam got there first, bringing them inside before shutting the front door. “He’s taking a page out of your book,” Rod told Adam, smiling widely, “he’s at a human college, studying graphic design.”

“Graphic design, huh? Sounds exciting!” Adam bobbed his head and slid his hands into his pockets. “I’ll have to give him a call. It’s been a while.”

“How many children do you have?” I asked Shannon.

“Four! Two girls, two boys.” She beamed. “Arnie’s the oldest, he’s Adam’s age. Then Pauline and Meredith.” She paused and slid a smile at Adam. “They used to fight over which of them got to be Adam’s wife when they all played house.”

Adam chuckled, a twinge of color showing in his cheeks. “I remember.”

Rod laughed. “I like to think they helped you practice your shifting skills; you’d turn into a dog because then you couldn’t be married.”

I snickered behind my hand.

“Ah, yes, always a heartbreaker,” Rod said, clapping him on the back. “Well, except for now, it would appear. I’ll tell you, Holly, when Bella and Morty told us the news, we about had a collective heart attack. They were beginning to think this one would never settle down!”

Adam spread his arms out. “And yet, here I am. Fiancé, house… heck, we even have a cat wandering around here somewhere.
