I waited for Jennifer to finish, then slid the letter aside to reveal the second page. It was one sentence:
Clue #2: The clue is in the letter.
âHuh. So itâs notââ
Jennifer gave another small shake of her head. âLetâs make a copy,â she said, then led me to a small cupboard in the center of the room. She pulled on the handle, and a fancy printer rolled out.
Handing me the original, she grabbed a pencil and paper from another drawer, and waved me into the Jane Austen museum. We cut past the display where weâd found the clue, and through a door that led straight to the entryway.
I followed her outside to the fountain with its lights bright enough to read by.
âNow we can talk.â
I coughed. âYou really think we needed to come all the way out here?â
Jennifer met my gaze. âThe shelf by the secret passageway trembled. Someone was there.â
âWhy didnât you say anything?â I demanded. Anonymous letters. Family secrets. People spying. Winterton Chalet got creepier and creepier.
âI didnât want to freak you out, but I always feel like someone is watching me here.â
The mansion was beautiful, and seemed to have everything you could want, but it reminded me of those monkey trapsâthe kind with a yummy banana inside that only holds the monkeys because they wonât let go of the banana.
âItâs got to be the misspellings,â Jennifer said as we pulled out our copies. âGrandmother was particular about details. I once misspelled something in a letter I sent to her, and her response was basically two pages of scolding. Spelling reflects on your character, she insisted. She may have been sick when she wrote that, but if she could organize a whole mystery on her deathbed, these mistakes have to be part of the clue.â
âEspecially since she misspelled Brandonâs name twice.â I pulled out my pen. âLetâs mark it up.â
We worked together drawing circles around all the misspelled words, then made a list.
When weâd finished, I tapped the paper. âEvery mistake is a missing letter, see?â
Jenniferâs face lit up. âYouâre right!â
We both took notes.
