It never ceased to amaze Pete how much garbage twelve hundred people could produce in a week. He couldn’t help but wonder sometimes if clearing it all away only exacerbated the problem. If no one came along to move the trash out of sight, out of mind, would folks be forced to face their own wasteful habits and find ways to reduce the amount of garbage they created?

He shook his head. Driving the Xpeditor for hours each day with only a pig for company gave him too much time to think. Thinking too much had never served him well. He’d done nothing but think about Lily all day.

“I’m pathetic, aren’t I, Pearl?”

She appeared to nod in zealous agreement.

“I appreciate your honesty.”

He checked the time. In ten minutes, he would need to head to the school to pick up Braedon. His nephew was never far from his thoughts either. Most of the time, Pete thought about what a wonder the kid was and how lucky Pete was to have him in his life. But he also thought about Braedon’s dad, and Braedon’s mood swings, and how much having the kid around took Pete back to his own childhood. Back to memories that wavered in the corners of his mind like shadows that couldn’t be nailed down.

His cell rang. When he saw Dani’s name on the screen, his heart dropped a beat. Pearl gave him a long-suffering look as he picked up the phone.

“Dani? Are you okay?”

He thought he heard an exasperated groan, but it was hard to be sure over the rumble of the Xpeditor.

“Everything’s fine. I got off work early and was hoping you could pick me up and take me to the school to get Braedon.”

Pete’s face scrunched. That didn’t make sense. “Your shift is over? It just started two hours ago.”

“I’m aware of that. Can you come?”

Something fishy was going on. Pearl raised her snout as if she smelled it, too. He’d promised his boss he wouldn’t take any more time than necessary to help out with his nephew, but how could he say no to Dani? His gut told him it was important.

“Okay, I’ll be right there.”

He had altered his Monday route to better accommodate picking Braedon up from school—which had caused consternation among several waste service customers that he’d had to smooth over—but the gas station was in the opposite direction of the school. The town office was going to get calls about this, and his boss was going to chew him out, but Pete wasn’t too worried. There was no waiting list of folks gunning for Pete’s job.

Dani was ready when he pulled up. She made a face as she climbed in. “There’s no room in here.”

“Pearl, scoot over.”

“There’s nowhere for her to scoot.” Dani squirmed around trying to squeeze into the small amount of space Pearl didn’t occupy. “How does Braedon ride around like this?”

“He’s not going to fit today, that’s for sure. Do you want me to take you to the carport to get the Dodge?”

“No, just drop me off at the school.
