Twenty-Four
A few days after their return from Belfast, Eric announced yet again that he was âpopping outâ.
âWhere to?â Liz asked, her heart dropping like a stone.
âJust down to Mumâs,â he replied, as he got up from the kitchen table.
Couldnât he go at least a few days without seeing her, whoever she might be?
You know damn well itâs Emma Harrington, Liz admonished herself, her heart twisting as unbidden images of them together filled her brain.
But she couldnât do that, not just yet, she decided, trying to get a grip on things. Because as soon as Liz admitted to herself that Eric really was having an affair, then her life as she knew it was over.
She couldnât carry on like this â they couldnât carry on like this, pretending that everything was OK on the outside, when inwardly they were both falling apart. Well, Liz was anyway. Maybe Eric was finding this all very straightforward and she was the one feeling the strain.
âI know, but I promised Mum Iâd call over,â he told her. âSheâs still feeling a bit down after the funeral.â
âOK then, why donât we all go?â Liz suggested, trying to keep her voice casual. âIâm sure sheâd like to see Toby too.â
At this, she could clearly see his facial muscles twitch. âWell, yeah, good idea, but wonât one of us have to stay behind and keep an eye on the dogs?â
âOh right, Iâd almost forgotten.â Liz had forgotten all about the dogs and the fact that one of them was being collected this evening.
âYou donât mind me taking Toby, then?â Eric seemed thoughtful. âYouâre right, Iâm sure Mum would like to see him.â
She sat back, her mind racing. He wouldnât dream of involving their son in one of his trysts, would he?
No, she was being over-sensitive now. If Eric was taking Toby with him, then evidently he was planning to visit his mother and her mind was simply running away with her.
He wouldnât stoop so low as to bring his son, their son to a meeting with with a mistress. Because if so, then Eric really was no longer the man sheâd fallen in love with, and a million miles away from the one sheâd married.
When he had settled the toddler in his pushchair, and the two were ready to leave, Liz bent down and lightly kissed the top of Tobyâs head.
âOK, then,â she told the two people she loved most in the world as they readied themselves to leave. âHave fun.â
