Chapter Fourteen

A banging on the front door stopped Donya at the entrance to the hall. She turned, looking back at Jahl with raised eyebrows, but he waved her on. “Get Alriane, I’ll see who’s at the door.”

Rouen followed him, and Jahl swung the door open. Instead of inviting Cam in, he joined him on the stoop and coaxed him down the steps. “What brings you here, brother?”

“Mom,” Cam said, as if the mention of their stubborn parent was all it took to explain everything. He eyed Wiley but didn’t slow down. “She wants you to visit, and she’s not taking any delays.” He backed up onto the path to the house when Jahl clapped him on his brawny shoulder, and Rouen stepped down to join them. “I made the mistake of coming home from my deliveries without you, and she sent me right back out to tell you again. I’m bringing you home with me this time.” He folded his arms on his chest and stared at Wiley, his brows creasing above his nose. “I can’t be running back and forth into town all day.”

“He looks determined.” Jahl teased. “Doesn’t he, Rouen? I don’t think we can refuse him.”

Donya stepped out of the doorway, Alriane on her hip and a carpetbag held by her side.

Cam gazed at Jahl and then up at Donya on the stoop. “You were heading for the manor, weren’t you?”

“No, no. You convinced me.”

Cam shoved Jahl back a step. “Little brothers, pesky critters.” He headed for his delivery wagon. “Well, get in the wagon. There are a few items in the back, but there’ll be plenty of room for at least two of you.” A powerfully built man, Cam climbed onto the wagon and into the seat in one practiced move.

Jahl took the bag from Donya. “You packed fast.”

“I’ve been busy and hadn’t put away Ariane’s washed clothes from our trip to Loeban. I tossed most of the stack into this one. It should hold her until I can put together a better assortment.”

“Mom will make do. Where’s Nimbles?”

Donya glanced at the open front door. “He was following us.”

Juggling Wiley and the bag, Jahl worked to get an arm freed up.

Rouen pushed past him. “I’ll take Alriane. Go find Nimbles.”

Alriane still rubbing her eyes, leaned into her uncle’s hands and slumped her head on his shoulder.

Donya crossed the threshold, then charged inside, calling out the fox’s name.

After tossing the bag in the back, Jahl unlatched each side of the tailgate and let it fall. He set Wiley on the tailgate. Anxiety stiffened his back, and he picked him back up. It would be best to keep the fox close. Cam turned in his seat. “Why are you carrying a fox? You know you’re carrying a fox, and it’s not a red fox.”

“It’s a desert Wa-fox; they don’t come in red. That would defeat the purpose of being hard to find in the desert.”

“And yet you found one.” Cam shook his head, a whisper of a smile curving up the corner of his mouth.
