“Release the kraken.”

Xandie avoided the yelling protesters waving their placards and stood on the top step of the police station. “Release the kraken?”

Xandie’s Aunt Winifred dropped her protest sign and rubbed the small of her back. “The fans have decided your grandmother is not only the wicked witch of Point Muse, but also the kraken. Basically, I think they mean she’s an unstoppable monster.” Winifred shook her shoulder length, fire-engine red hair. “They have no idea how accurate they are.”

“Are you still on a cooking strike?” Aunt Winifred, Holly’s mother and the youngest Harrow daughter, was the cook at Harrow House and had refused to step into the kitchen while Elspeth competed in the Ultimate Witch Fights.

“She cooked the jailbird’s meal last night. She’s too softhearted.” Amelia Harrow, middle daughter and Lila’s mother, jabbed her curvy sister in the ribs.

Winifred blushed. “Those deputy brothers of Zach’s have no clue how to cook. No one needs to be subjected to overly hard microwave meals. Not even Elspeth Harrow.”

“She has a solid following, and her numbers are growing exponentially.” A woman close to Xandie’s five foot five height, with oily blonde hair with blue streaks, holding a placard proclaiming fair fights for all, stood close to the steps of the police station.

“You mean Elspeth Harrow?” The last thing her wicked witch grandmother needed was a following. They would only encourage the Harrow witch to crazier levels of chaos and mayhem.

“She’s pretty popular and has more personality than Vena Nox.” The blonde protester dropped her sign on the ground and rubbed a shoulder.

Looked like protesting was hard on the body. “I take it you’re a fan of the show?”

“This is Lilith Ironclaw. She is UWF’s number one fan,” Winifred gushed. “She has ethics. Doesn’t believe that the show should be global and pay-per-view. Everyone should have access to the fights.”

“The show was a fine example of stamina, physicality, and mental strategy, along with showcased witch gifts. It should be available for all to watch on the witch web. Not just those financially solvent. Dewberry had no clue the witch storm he’d stepped into when he started sourcing global rights and sponsorship.”

“The fans were mad at him?” Enough to kill?

“Everyone was. His dubious business practices wouldn’t have stood up to scrutiny, but I’m sure Belle Lafleur is different.” Lilith lowered her voice. “Lafleur worked her way up from the lowly rung of a witch fighter in the stable to become a showcased fighter.”

Xandie cleared her throat. “About that. I think Belle has some plans for expansion too.”

“Belle respects the fans, unlike Dewberry or that opportunist Stroud. She’ll do what’s right.” Lilith hoisted her placard back on the bum shoulder. “Better get back to it. I heard the production crew might be doing some crowd shots this morning.” She slipped to the front of the group and lifted her sign high, chanting release the kraken with the rest of the protesters.

“So UWF has rabid fans, I take it?”

“Of course not...”

Amelia overrode her sister’s protest. “Lilith Ironclaw, a.
