It’s not clear why Napsley takes the claim that Thomas Cale was the instigator of the murders of the Rus Royal family at face value. The accusation came from Alexei Comsky, a loyal Stalovek supporter of many years standing, who later became notorious for his claims that his boss had invented, among other things, dynamite and the electric light bulb. Whether Stalovek, ‘the greatest mass murderer of the last hundred years’, would have been emotionally disturbed by the execution of the royal children is questionable. On the other hand, the more reliable Nadezhda Krupskaya did say that her husband, who claimed he was present when the committee voted, told her that it was Cale’s idea but that Stalovek had supported it and persuaded more doubtful others by declaring, ‘Good riddance to bad rubbish.’
