Samantha and Leon crossed the spongy gang plank onto a wooden inter-island transport at the Frederiksted pier. They watched as the crew swung a Mitsubishi minivan onto the deck and drop it down among the refrigerators and used cars. Zuma Dog followed them on board and counted out five hundred dollars to the captain.

“You the only passengers,” he said. “These men will take you to Charlotte Amalie. No customs, no passports, nobody will know you are there, you can get a direct flight to the states. Saint Thomas is nice, you won’t stand out, lots of tourists, two or three cruise ships a day, go to the Hotel 1829, they got steaks the size of catcher’s mitts.”

Samantha kissed Zuma Dog. “You’re a good man Zuma. Maybe we’ll see you again if we come back for a honeymoon or something.”

“Good luck to you., may peace and joy come to you both.”

The boat’s rattling diesel trailed a black smear of filth into the air as they left the tiny harbor. Samantha and Leon stood at the bow facing the thick salt breeze. Off in the distance the cloud ringed peak of St. Thomas’ Crown Mountain rose above the horizon. A beat up Catalina 42 headed down island passed close, running fast under tight sails. It carried the name Bad Girl, at the wheel was a couple smiling and laughing. The woman waved, Samantha saw she was missing three of her fingers. Wonder what happened to her?

“What did you say?”

“Oh nothing, I was kind of dreaming that could be us one day,” she said.

Leon pressed Samantha against the prow, he put his arms around her waist. Her black hair flowed in the wind around them, her animal scent called to him.

Leon brushed a curl of hair from her face, “I’m no De Caprio and this sure ain’t the Titanic but no man ever felt more love for a woman than I do now.”
