FRESH TO THE MASSES

In January 2011, Walmart, the nation’s largest food retailer, announced a five-year plan to make thousands of its packaged, store-brand foods healthier and to lower prices on fruits and vegetables. According to Andrea Thomas, a senior vice president for sustainability at Walmart, “If we are successful in our efforts to lower prices, we believe we can save Americans who shop at Walmart approximately $1 billion per year on fresh fruit and vegetables.”* Walmart came to the decision when it joined Let’s Move!, the White House and First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign to end childhood obesity. Among its promises, Walmart is pledging to cut sodium by 25 percent, reduce added sugars by 10 percent, and eliminate all industrially added trans fats from its store brand, Great Value, by 2015. Walmart hopes its decision will help persuade major food suppliers to follow suit and help bring down the price of healthy food.
