The Wildflower

Side by side

We watched the devastation.

Alone in the landslide

Of earth’s lamentation.

I found a little wildflower

And sat to keep it company.

Both of us in the rain shower,

Wilting from the intensity.

But the flower withered and sagged,

It smelled like nothing now.

I held its thin stem in my hand

And cradled it, gentle and slow—

I placed the flower back on the ground,

Lay down to keep it company.

I watched its petals blowing around.

Now I was alone in the immensity.
