Chapter 23

Vivienne walked briskly back to the apartment, going over in her head the conversation she planned on having with Tom. I must try not to get angry and try to keep calm so I can get an idea of why he cleared out the account and how much he knows, she thought.

She let herself into the apartment and immediately saw a note from Miriam on the kitchen table.

Gone for some fresh air. See you at the spa. M x

Vivienne was relieved. She did not want Miriam to overhear her conversation.

Taking a deep breath, she dialled Tom’s mobile.

“Hello, Vivienne, having a good time?”

Vivienne detected a sneer in his voice. “Well, I was until you moved our money out from our joint account and cancelled the credit card. What’s going on, Tom?”

“Well, you tell me, Vivienne. It seems you’ve been very busy.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Busy downloading account information from my laptop, Viv. Does that jog your memory? Alex needed help printing off a project for school so we used my laptop in the office. And when I went to clear the history, it was all there.”

Shit, she thought, breathing deeply. The night she had downloaded and printed off the documents she had used his laptop. She didn’t have a choice as she wanted to work quickly, and her laptop was in her office. But she was sure she had deleted the history and covered her tracks. Obviously she hadn’t.

“I have nothing to hide. I am entitled to any information about our finances. The question here, Tom, is why did you clear out our joint account? At least half the money in that account is mine. Why did you do that?”

“I’m protecting my assets. My question is why would my wife print off every financial account we have? Can you answer that?”

“We’re not getting anywhere here,” Vivienne said, exasperated.

“Well, if you’re trying to build a case for a separation, remember I know all the top solicitors in this city who will be happy to represent me. So do your worst and be ready for a fight.”

And then he hung up.

That bastard, Vivienne thought, almost shaking with rage. But then she’d known he would become defensive – she just didn’t expect him to clear out their account like that.

She took a deep breath to calm herself. Everything was going to be okay. She would get a printout of the statements, like Jack said – it would prove that at least half that money was hers.

She grinned when he said he knew all the top solicitors in Dublin. That might be true, but she had the top solicitor in Galway and all the information to implicate his solicitor and banking friend in fraud for the deal they pulled with her forged signature. She was going to let him think he had the upper hand – that way he would be less prepared.

Oh, I really need that massage now, she thought, rubbing the knots in her shoulders after that conversation.

She would call Sarah later to get an idea about Tom’s mood and also if he had said anything to her and Alex.
