He smiled and got dressed. For no reason other than finding it a sweet gesture, he folded the note and placed it in his pocket. He found a piece of paper and a pen and scratched out a quick note, leaving his number as requested. He pulled the door closed, took the elevator downstairs to the lobby, and stepped out with a broad smile into the morning sun.
He made his way to the train station and caught the first train home.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The carefully designed gardens were laid out, paths installed, and ponds built. Teams of builders constructed follies representing scaled-down versions of an ancient pantheon, a castle tower, and other nonsensical structures. One construction team was much larger than the others, the ground they excavated much deeper and wider. Below ground, they laid out a large foundation, and rooms with stone walls and stone floors. One room was even circular. This folly was more complex than the others.
The family carried over the idea of follies from their family estate in England where their ancestors had constructed similar, though not so complex, structures. They were a nod to the past, purely ornamental, and meant to provide aesthetic value to their owners. That was the intent for most of them, in any case. But this structure was very different from the others. It had a utilitarian purpose. As the workmen went about their duties, he stood and watched for a time, pleased with their progress. This was his own design and as he watched it come to life, he knew that it would do nicely.
He walked through the edge of the gardens to the backyard of the impressive house that was taking shape on the hill overlooking the town below. He would use all his abilities to ensure this house was more secure than the previous oneâthe one that his enemies had burned down. They would need to pay for that. For the time being, he was focused on securing his familyâs future and safeguarding his wife and children. Keeping them safe was important to him. Future generations depended on it.
