Chapter Eleven

Maurice strode into the main kitchen at eight o’clock expecting Armand to have been there since five thirty to supervise breakfast preparations, but Armand, sleeping off two bottles of Merlot and half a bottle of Brandy on top of his jet lag, was still snoring logs.

When Maurice found the new chef was missing, he snarled, made some insulting comments about the man's lineage, and then he smiled evilly.

“I think I'll just wander into my office and write Armand up on report,” he said. “It will go on his record at Head Office and it won't bode well for him when Angelo Massarini and Adrianne Chrisander see it.”

When Armand finally waltzed in just before ten o'clock, Maurice looked at him scathingly and tore a strip off him in front of the rest of the staff.

“How dare you talk to me like that!” stormed Armand. “I'm the Executive Chef on this ship! I can come in when I please!”

“Oh, no, you're not,” smirked Maurice. “I am the Executive Chef as long as I'm aboard, and that's going to be until Cape Town at the earliest. You will follow the schedule I've made out for you to the minute, and I won't tolerate any deviations. Your eyes are pretty bloodshot, Chef Armand! I'll bet you've been hitting the bottle, just like you used to when you were a student at Cordon Bleu.”

Armand, embarrassed and annoyed by the accuracy of Maurice’s barb, turned bright red, then purple with rage.

“How dare you cast aspersions on me? How dare you suggest I drink too much? You're out of line, Mr. Montage.”

“Out of line? Is that why your room steward found two empty bottles of Merlot and a half empty bottle of Brandy in your cabin while you were showering? I had him check because I know you from years ago. I know what a heavy drinker you are. Well, you'd better not let your drinking affect your job performance with Cosmos Cruise Line, Chef Armand, or I’ll have you dismissed, and before you say anything else, I do have that power,” lied Maurice.

“Why you %^$*&***#@#$%%%” came out of Armand’s lips as he leaned toward Maurice with a raised fist.

“Swearing at me and threatening me physically...” drawled Maurice. “That's going to look brilliant on the report I send to Adrianne Chrisander, isn't it? I did warn you to be on your best behavior, Chef Armand, if you want to keep your employment with Cosmos.”

Another stream of expletives came out of Armand’s lips.

“Now I've heard enough,” snarled Maurice. “Shut up and get to work. I have a meeting right now or I'd stay and supervise you myself,” and with that, Maurice walked majestically out of the kitchen.

Armand stared after him with an expression of hatred on his face.

“That man is even worse than he was twenty years ago when we were students together at Cordon Bleu,” he muttered, but he did turn his attention to the preparation of the lunchtime meal.

Maurice returned from his meeting an hour
