Chapter Twelve

It was two hours later.

Sofia Marconi looked at Adrianne Chrisander, shock all over her lovely face.

“He's in the Brig? Why?”

“He threatened another passenger with a firearm. As you know, Sofia, you're not allowed to have firearms on board a ship. International Law,” said Keith who was sitting beside his wife

“Why would Giovanni threaten somebody?” asked Sofia, and they could hear the bewilderment in her voice.

“He mistook the passenger for the man he who’s suing him for forty million pounds or more in England,” said Keith.

“Forty million? I know nothing about any lawsuit!”

“How well do you know your fiancé, Sofia?” asked Adrianne gently.

“We've known each other casually for some time, about three years, but we've only been dating for maybe six months. You know I don't have much time for a social life with my Company needing all my attention, Adrianne.”

“You don't have a lot of luck with men, do you, Sofia?” murmured Adrianne sympathetically. “At least this one isn't a blackmailer and a philanderer. He is, however, a thief, a plagiarist. He stole four novels from a man called Clifford Houghton and published them as his own. Of course they were made into movies as well, and I understand Giovanni made about two hundred million pounds from those royalties and film rights. He goes to Court on the 29th of January in London, and it's our Legal Advisor’s opinion that Mr. Houghton has claim to half that money. Your fiancé doesn't want to pay it, so he thought he could deal with Mr. Houghton another way.”

“Unfortunately, he accosted the wrong Houghton. Clifford is the man who is suing him and his brother James is the man who's aboard our ship. Giovanni tried to shoot James, but our Security Officers were able to intervene so at least he doesn't have to face an attempted murder charge,” said Keith.

Sofia turned white.

“I remember him going to Court about three months ago. He said the guy was an extortionist and of course the case was dismissed immediately. I thought nothing else of it. You know I've had my own experience with extortion, Adrianne, so I had nothing but empathy for Giovanni!”

“Yes…well, it wasn't an extortion attempt. It was an attempt by Clifford Houghton to receive monies he’s legally due. Whether your fiancé is there or not, Court will convene in London on January 29th and I strongly believe Clifford will receive the funds that he should have been paid all along. Those four books based on Clifford’s work have garnered the best reviews Giovanni ever received, and those four movies have made more money then all his others put together.”

Sofia twisted the diamond on the third finger of her left hand and looked down at it sorrowfully.

“I don't know if I can marry a man like that,’ she said fretfully.

“That’s something only you can decide, Sofia,” said Adrianne kindly.

“I'll have to go to my suite and think about this,” said Sofia. “I'm so sorry I brought somebody aboard The Wayward Wind who is causing you difficulty, Adrianne, I value our friendship very much.
