The word-flow did not begin to wane until seven, when people started to leave after saying their good-byes and hugging Nathan and the boys with a familial love that had an unbroken chain of nearly six millennia of familiarity and warmth to it. Nathan felt as though he was embracing the children and grandchildren of his father’s friends in the old Birlad of 1904…and that was the reality of it. Tears? What would be the purpose of such a satisfying evening without any? Where there were Yidden talking of the old days, it seems there would have to be a river of salty tears.

“Well, Nathan, I probably won’t be seeing you before you leave on Friday. Yossi tells me that you’re taking him to Bucureshti, so I’ll be conducting Sabbath services this week. If he doesn’t be more careful I’ll take his job away. Don’t breathe a word of this to him, but I still have trouble reading directly from the Torah.” Berel Usher whispered the last remark, but just loud enough for the Rabbi to hear.

“Don’t worry, Bereleh. I know. That’s why I always have Iancu looking over your shoulder, so he can prompt you a little. And IF I had a contract for you to rip up, you would be doing me the biggest favor of my life, dear man.”

With these parting laughs and the Californians’ final thanks to the Ushers for such a memorable afternoon and evening, they walked down the street merrily toward the shul to escort Rabbi Nachman to his door. No need to drive the rental car this short way.

“Rabbi, I can’t begin to tell you how we enjoyed this. Here we are talking all this time about the Fusgeyers, Birlad at the turn of the century, and now this gathering. It was, to me, like a certain closure. A completion of the circle. Birlad, 1904…Birlad, 2000.”

“I agree, Naftali. Now I think you can also understand my reluctance to leave Romania. I just couldn’t do that to these dear menschen. They all need me, and even more so, I need them.” Nathan nodded comprehending the Rabbi’s point more so now than he had been able to ascertain before. Yossi Nachman, grinning warmly, put his arms around the three Amerikaners. “Tomorrow, Naftali, tomorrow. I still have to get our Fusgeyers to Prague. To Berlin. To Bremerhaven. We have a lot of ground to cover!”
