Chapter Fifteen

Jasmine didn’t come back down to earth after her day at the lake with Rhett until Larry Atwood showed up at her clinic.

Once they rescued her fishing pole and caught a couple of trout. Rhett set up a picnic on the dock, and they kissed and laughed their way through supper. Rhett shared stories about fishing with his grandpa. After a day by the lake and a long goodbye with the Greenes, who made Jasmine promise to come back for a visit, Rhett drove her home. He was a perfect gentleman, walking her to her door and giving her another kiss good night that left Jasmine cursing his good manners. On Sunday, Rhett took her to on a hike and, once again, left her on her front door wanting more.

Monday arrived with Jasmine determined to take the next step in her relationship with Rhett. She breezed through her morning appointments, still glowing from the memory of the heated kisses they shared. An angry yelling coming from the waiting room interrupted her daydreaming. She came in and found a man whose eyes were overly bright, glittering with what her gut told her was hatred bolstered by something artificial. He held a seriously underweight Staffordshire terrier shaking in his arms. The man put the dog down, and she tried to get up but collapsed back down on the floor, unable to walk.

“What’s her name?” Jasmine asked while running her hand over the dog’s thin coat, feeling each rib.

“She don’t need a name for what I need her to do.”

“What is your name?” she asked the dog’s owner.

“Larry Atwood,” he spat out. “Quit askin’ stupid questions and get to work.”

Jasmine fought to remain professional while her anger surged. The man came into the clinic belligerent, demanding that his dog be treated right away. The dog was in distress, and her enlarged nipples showed the dog must have had a litter of puppies recently.

“Imani, get my bag, please.” Jasmine eyed Zach sitting at the reception desk. They just had a meeting to review protocol in situations like this. He held up his phone for a second with a nod. And got up from his desk, heading out of earshot to call animal control.

Imani came back with her bag. Her assistant eyed the dog’s owner warily.

“I think we’re going to need a calcium IV set up,” Jasmine said to Imani.

“What the hell is that?” Larry demanded.

Jasmine knelt down on the floor next to the shivering animal, putting her stethoscope in her ears to listen to the dog’s heartbeat. “It’s treatment for when a dog has eclampsia, which I suspect this dog has.”

Jasmine sat back on her heels and glared at the owner. “Mr. Atwood, you can’t breed this dog anymore. She has been over-bred, she’s severely malnourished, and her lack of care is clear.”

Mr. Atwood’s jaw clenched. “I take care of what’s mine just fine.”

Zach came back to the desk and gave Jasmine a thumbs-up, letting her know that animal control was on the way.
