LOOSE ENDS

The huge paw smashed the small, fragile dagger, shattering it into thousands of shards, hitting both the Chaosite and the paladin. There was a loud bang, just like a gas insulated substation explosion. Yegor’s Fighting Form exploded, showering not only the arena and its surroundings, but also all nearby viewers with bloodied chunks of gore. It looked gross, but I really liked the result. Cyril died, too, but the effect of the “damage reflection” would haunt everyone for a long time. It was safe to say that the experiment was a success. Secrets and suspicions like these would do me good. I needed to make another such dagger for myself, just in case. Sure, its effect was, well, explosive, but it could help take out a strong opponent. It was interesting, if nothing else.

The Tournament of the Followers is finished.

This time no Scrolls were needed — the fiery letters appeared in the air before us one by one.

I was ready to use my Arcobaleno, but fortunately didn’t have to. So, they credited me with the victory and passed me the vote, which I could’ve received if I had defeated Dasha in time. However, the fight with Chaos was a draw — there weren’t any re-counts in this fight, neither for Innokenty nor for me.

It was a bit disappointing, but I wagered that I got out easy. The only situation in which this victory would mean something was if we ever unite with Dasha to oppose Petrovich and Innokenty’s coalition in the Council. The lost vote would then turn the situation from a loss to a stalemate. For everything else, regardless of whether or not the paladins had won or lost the last fight, I needed either Petrovich’s support or the support of the two remaining factions in order to promote my ideas in the Council.

“I have to say, even I was surprised with the last fight,” Petrovich said. I could see that the old man was rather pleased with the fact that he still had the most votes in the Council. “No one won this time. Let’s go and congratulate our allies on the considerable growth each of them has just demonstrated. If everyone else follows their example, then very soon our settlement will become a force to be reckoned with.”

“Who would’ve thought that they would have the time to help a newcomer get an advanced Mark so quickly? You okay?” Did Dmitri decide to take care of me? Or was he afraid that I would get too emotional, like Dasha did, and do something stupid?

“Don’t worry about me. I thought that something like this could happen,” I turned in the direction of the tombstones, where people started to gather after Petrovich’s speech. “Let’s go, we should congratulate our fighters, and also maybe give them a lesson for all the nonsense that they did during the battle.”

“Yes, that’s a good idea,” the blacksmith chuckled.
