Cooperating

Exactly four days after Agent Amy Williams and her partner, Agent Jonathan Haymaker, visited Derrick in prison, they had him out as promised. His first destination as he rode home, escorted by them, was to their office. There, Derrick cooperated with them. He told them of all his dealings with Fat Jerome. He signed sworn statements stating that all that he had in fact revealed to them was true, and that he would testify to it when the time came.

When he left their office under the strict recommendation from the both of them for him to keep a low profile, the only thing that seemed to matter to him was seeing his dear mother and confronting his little brother about what the FBI agents had shown him. He, therefore, took a taxi to his mother’s new address.

Damn, this a nice-ass neighborhood, he thought, seeing the clean streets and the big, beautiful houses. He then saw something that snapped his ass out of his amazement at the sight of his new neighborhood. He saw his candy apple red old-school Chevy Impala parked in front of his mother’s car. He was amazed that his car still looked good and that the chrome on it had not dulled as far as he could see.

“How much do I owe you, sir?” Derrick asked the taxi driver.

“Thirteen dollars and twenty cents.”

Derrick handed the man a twenty dollar bill. He then awaited his change.

“Here you go, young man. You have a beautiful day now ya hear?”

“You too, sir,” replied Derrick before exiting the taxi.

He didn’t even get good on his mother’s porch before she came running out to greet him. “Oh, my Godddd! Derrick, why didn’t you let me know that you were being released today?”

“Just wanted it to be a secret,” he said, hugging her tightly.

She placed both her hands at each side of his head where his ears were and looked him in his eyes, then up and down. “Baby, you look so good. I missed you.”

She hugged and kissed him again, before they made their way inside. “So how do you like our new place?” she asked.

“It’s beautiful, Momma. It really is,” he said somewhat sad.

His mother looked at him again in his eyes. “Boy, Derrick, you got those big, pretty light brown eyes just like your daddy. I can look at them and tell when something is heavy on your mind. What is it, baby? Aren’t you happy to be home? God knows I’m happy to see you.”

Derrick saw that his mother had lost about fifteen or twenty pounds. She always was slim, but now she looked as if she had been up day and night on crack. She had a bandanna on her head and, when she hugged him both times, he could feel that her strength was failing her.

“Momma, why didn’t you tell me?” he asked, avoiding her question of whether he was happy.

“What, Derrick?”

“About the cancer.”

She turned away from having direct eye contact with him, then grabbed her feather duster and started dusting off the top of the television.
