Bill stopped not far away but not too close.

The same man she’d known, yet a different one, all of him cut lean and hard as a fence post.

‘They weren’t your dogs were they?’ he said, looking back at the nearest black lump without pity.

‘Not my dogs,’ she got out in pants. She had a stitch that was like a knife in her side. ‘I was walking in the national park. That dog chased Velvet—’

‘Chased who?’

‘Velvet. My kangaroo. I never knew there were two dogs.’

There were scars across his left cheek, about three she could see clearly, with a nasty patch of redder skin underneath the whitish streaks. He wore a black jumper, the neck of it rolled right up under his chin. With black jeans it made his body look like it went forever.

All the colour in him was stripped out like his chair—left too long in the sun. She couldn’t tear her gaze from him.

‘You can’t look at me like that,’ he said, and something shifted in his eyes.

‘Like what?’

‘Like you care about me when I know you don’t.’
