CHAPTER FIFTEEN

At first, the darkness was complete and silent and heavy. It lay over Ernie like a lead blanket, pressing her down, filling her ears and nose and throat. But slowly, it pulled back, receding with each breath until a soft glow behind her eyelids brought her into awareness. A lilting sound trickled into her consciousness, liquid and soft, like a flute. Birdsong—a thrush, maybe? She inhaled, breathing in the scent of green, sharp and pungent, soft and fragrant, all at once.

Her eyes fluttered open as a cool breeze fluttered through her hair. Branches dotted with buds and leaves waved overhead, framing a brilliant blue sky. She tried to sit up but found she couldn’t move. In fact, she couldn’t feel anything below her chin. She was breathing; she knew that. And thinking. But she couldn’t so much as scratch the itch on her nose. Unease slid through her. Was this permanent? Was she paralyzed? She lay still and focused on moving her fingers but wasn’t even sure she was still connected to them, and she couldn’t raise her head to check. And then another realization struck her:

She couldn’t feel her heart beating. She wasn’t sure whether it even was.

Oh, god. She was certain she’d tried to say that out loud, and certain her lips had moved, but she hadn’t been able to make a sound. Her unease was rapidly morphing into fear. What the hell had happened? How had she gotten here?

The Sunrise. She’d tried to use it against Virginia. It had been their last hope. But the Forger had easily thwarted her brilliant plan and destroyed the relic Ernie had traveled to the deepest part of the ocean to retrieve. It had taken a mere instant for Virginia to conjure a sort of blast dome. A mere instant for her to trap Ernie and her allies: Gabe, Nuria, Tarlae, Minh—the ones who had been determined enough to join her, brave enough to risk everything. And it had taken only a few seconds after that for the Sunrise to detonate right next to them, like a nuclear blast.

When she and Gabe had first talked about the Sunrise and what it could do, Ernie had thought it might mean a new beginning, and Gabe had said that it might bring an apocalypse. Now it seemed that he’d made the better guess. The world hadn’t ended, or at least, it seemed like it hadn’t, but something had. Ernie felt it with a certainty that didn’t make sense, considering that she wasn’t even sure where she was or whether she was actually alive.

Legs? Was her diamondback still with her, or had they been separated? Ernie closed her eyes and sent a silent prayer heavenward. Please let Legs be okay. Her arm had burned right before the end. It might have been a goodbye, for all she knew. Just like the one she’d gotten from Gabe, the one that had broken her heart and filled her with a fierce joy all at once.

Gabe. Was he here, too? She couldn’t turn her head.
