The creature known as Speculum ran.

He ran out of fear. Panic fell in waves throughout his body. Deep down, the man admitted it had felt terror upon seeing the Scarent known as Colab, a feeling so intense that it was over a mile away before it realized it was running like a wild animal.

He was now the most powerful creature on Genoa! Yet he was running from a memory, a mere ghost.

Stopping in the middle of the tall grass upon the Oaken Plains, he turned and looked around. The tall dark form would have struck fear in anyone who happened to glance his way. His metal skin shone in the sunlight where his cloak had come open. Even his hair had been turned to hard metal. It swept back from his face and hung in a thick braid inches below where his collar would be.

How many seasons had he lived like this, turned into a creature without any say, a slave to his evil master? But still, the power coursed through him as he stood there in the sunlit path.

Confused as to how he had gotten here, and unsure of where he was at the moment, he fell back onto his orders and once again the power took over his own thoughts.

“I am powerful,” he growled. “I fear nothing!” He turned to head back to duties that held him bound when he came once more face to face with his past.

“Brother,” Colab the Meshi said as he stepped out of the tall yellow grass, his brown scales glistening still with the morning’s rain. He too was now larger than he had been those many seasons ago when he had been chosen by Meshi. His youthful face had been covered with scales, no hair sat upon his head, and his clear forest green eyes had been turned blood red with a black vertical slit in their center. His thin boyish form had been transformed into a ten foot giant with strong muscles, which helped protect his most precious item, Meshi the Scarent snake. Meshi rested around his strong neck, hidden beneath his cloak. He hadn’t left his body since their bonding.

“I am not that!” The Speculum growled and raised his magic to his fingertips ready to attack.

Anger flashed into his mind as he thought about the situation. ‘This Scarent does not know whom it is talking to. Was he not now the strongest, most feared creature? The king himself now feared him, and this Scarent knew nothing!’

“Do you not recognize me?” Colab said as he took yet another step forward with his large hands held out in welcoming. “We may look different now, both you and I, but once we were the same. Did our mother not tell us this often as we grew on our farm south of the Kandi Forest? Double trouble is what she called us,” Colab said with a wide grin of his snake features.

The Speculum held a hand out to halt Colab’s movement, but his killing magic died at his fingertips from shock after hearing the familiar words.
