17. The journey to enlightenment.

Within the periphery, Derek’s spirit wandered alone, lost amidst the vast expanse of emptiness. This bleak, grey existence resembled a purgatory, devoid of colour and joy. The weight of his solitude pressed upon him, amplifying the sorrow and longing that consumed his being. He longed to escape, help his friends, find solace from the haunting desolation, and finally enter Elysium.

Derek’s spectral presence drifted, his senses attuned to the elusive link he felt to Ezekiel’s sword. He searched for it, reaching into the unfathomable realm, hoping to understand the connection to the cursed weapon. It was a quest that had led him through the formless voids of this liminal space, like a fish chasing a teasing worm on a hook.

Yet, despite his initial elation at the prospect of unravelling the mystery, Derek’s search had proved frustratingly futile. The sword, or the essence of it, dangled before him like that elusive worm, tantalisingly close but always slipping through his spectral grasp. His pursuit had led him to dead ends and unanswered questions, leaving him adrift in the boundless uncertainty of the periphery.

As Derek continued his fruitless search, he couldn’t help but feel a longing and frustration. The link he felt to the sword was undeniable. A connection that transcended the boundaries of life and death, but its meaning remained shrouded in mystery, a puzzle with no apparent solution.

Time passed as Derek tirelessly searched for the sword or an escape.

But had no time passed? Here, time had no meaning. He explored every inch of the lifeless void, his every step echoing in the deafening silence. Yet, no matter how far he travelled, how deep he delved, the periphery offered no exit, no glimpse of hope.

Derek’s spirit withered, his once vibrant resolve dulled by the unending monotony. He would stand on the edge of the grey horizon, gazing longingly at the void beyond, his heart heavy with the strain of his entrapment. The periphery had become his solitary prison, a desolate landscape where even his prayers to Khor seemed to dissipate into nothingness.

In this forlorn existence, Derek’s only company were his memories, whispers of the past that echoed through the empty corridors of his mind. He clung to the recollections of his family and friends, their laughter, and the warmth of their companionship. These memories became his lifeline, a fragile thread connecting him to a world he could no longer reach.

Though he remained alone in the periphery, Derek resolved to find purpose within the confines of his desolation. Drawing upon his faith and the teachings of Khor, he sought solace in prayer and meditation, seeking enlightenment in the face of his eternal solitude. He turned inward, delving into his own spirit in search of the strength to endure.

Through his introspection, Derek discovered an inner light that the dreariness of the periphery could not extinguish. He nurtured the flame of hope within himself, channelling his energy into acts of self-reflection and self-improvement. He became a student of his own soul, exploring his being and uncovering hidden reservoirs of resilience and wisdom.
