Chapter Forty-One

Julie’s Journal

Forever Lost

THE knights of Aria surrounded the borders of their kingdom. If any of Osiris’s forces were to strike we would be ready. I was in the royal library, looking through Eviane’s spell books. Some of them made my father’s look tame. Pages filled with the same grotesque images of body parts meant for sacrifices, just as it was with Jackson. The poor kid. I can still see him stumbling about and trying his best to be an honorable knight... and he could have been... he could have been anything, but Eviane murdered him for false gods. Just why is she so devoted to these Olympians? I know that they used to be angels, but who and what type of powers do they possess?

All of her damned books only had how to summon them and how to appease them in the most deranged ways. There was a knock at the large brass doors. My eyes glowed pink as I cast a spell to open the door. It was Julius, still battered and bruised from the Trial by Combat. “I doubt that I’ll ever get used to that, Julie.”

“Me either,” I sighed. “But at least I finally have this magic thing under control.”

“How did you manage to do that?” asked Julius

“Would believe therapy masqueraded as girl talk?” I laughed.

“I’m sorry,” said a puzzled Julius, “but what’s therapy? Is it some form of contraption?”

“‘Contraption’?” I asked in a laugh. “And Nara thinks that I talk weird.”

“Did I miss the joke?” asked Julius. “We’re about to go into battle and the Multiverse may be at death’s door, but you actually think a manner of speech is comical?”

“I’m sorry,” I said. “It’s just that I can cast spells and face an army of Cursed Ones, but I still don’t know if any of us are going to live to see tomorrow. So, either all of this is a joke or I’m going to literally lose my mind.”

“I know what it’s like to feel insane,” said Julius. “Since the day I met Jackson, I thought that I was. I hated my feelings for him for so damn long and I despised myself for it. But now I loathe myself for completely different reasons.”

“You’re not insane because you loved someone,” I said. “No one can help who they love, they just do, and it’s not an illness. It’s what makes us human.”

“In your realm, maybe,” sighed Julius as a tear ran down his face. He took the Bible out of a bag strapped around his belt. He opened it to a page with Jackson’s most recent handwriting, his last written words. “I’ve been reading this book that Jason gave to Jackson. He was right, Jackson did love it. There were dozens of these passages called Psalms that he circled. They — they gave him hope. He underlined the story of this Moses person and his journey through the desert. He wrote that if these Jewish people can make it through such a crucible that we could make it through anything.
