Chapter Twenty

BC

Finding the right shop in Plymouth had been an adventure, particularly with Caddock attempting to direct him from the GPS on his mobile. The man might be brilliant on the pitch and at running a pub, but he had no sense of direction. They’d ended up halfway across the city before realising they’d gone the wrong way.

As Caddock had the largest and most comfortable vehicle out of all of their friends, he had volunteered to drive them all up to Plymouth for Graham’s weekly check-up. It would be the last one prior to his surgery. Francis had gone to the clinic with Graham while BC had been left with his idiotic husband.

They’d been hunting for a shop with winter wear for Graham all morning. Even given the summer month, the man had been struggling to keep his head and hands warm. They had to find a solution for him.

Grumbling like grumpy old men at each other, BC lambasted his former teammate’s intelligence while Caddock complained about his driving. They had to laugh at the ridiculousness of it when they realised the store was right in front of them. It had only taken them going around in circles to find the blasted place.

“How about this one?”

“Unless Graham has suddenly morphed into a five-year-old girl, I don’t believe he’ll be wanting a pink hat with a pink pig in a dress on it.” BC flung a matching pair of pink mittens at the idiot. “Why couldn’t Francis have come shopping with me? You’re a useless bastard. Put the damn bear hat down, I don’t care if it’s fleece and warm. Numpty.”

“Maybe we should stop looking in the kids’ section?”

“Good idea.”

Deciding to disregard anything Caddock brought to him, BC pulled together an excellent collection of knit hats and gloves. He hoped they would cheer Graham up a bit. He’d been dreading this last trip to the doctor for obvious reasons.

Most of the items had been pulled out of a back room as winter wear wasn’t exactly a typical summertime purchase. Once explanations had been given as to why they wanted them, the staff at the shop had been more than willing to hunt out stock from the previous year. Most of the hats they purchased were beanies of various colours and knits; hopefully at least one of them would be comfortable and warm enough to serve their purpose.

Six hours later, Graham had a burgundy beanie with bear ears on his head. It had been the one silly purchase of the morning. BC should’ve known his wanderer would love it best. They kept the regular-looking hats for trips beyond the Fisherman’s Refuge.

One glove had been sacrificed to a god. Zeus had snatched it straight from the shopping bag. They hadn’t been quick enough to stop the mini menace. The Yorkie had dragged it underneath a sofa and snarled at anyone who tried to take it off him.

Idiotic creature.

Aside from losing his hair, Graham’s body suffered from other side effects. His skin grew paler, and his nails were brittle.
