Chapter Fourteen

Persistent

Despite being on mute, the buzzing of my ringing cell phone was loud enough for Crystal to notice. She looked back at me with an expression like an unanswered phone constituted a mortal offense.

“What?” I whispered.

“You’re not going to pick up?”

“There’s a little too much going on right now to take on a new client. Plus those two probably heard the ringer. Keep moving.”

She resumed walking. “It could be important. What if it’s that blogger Michael who’s been helping you figure out the elemental stuff? Maybe he found something important.”

“He wouldn’t call the public line. That ringtone meant someone found one of my flyers or newspaper ads.”

The phone stopped ringing, and once again, resumed buzzing after mere seconds.

“At least tell them you’ll call them back,” said Crystal.

“Persistent, aren’t they?” whispered Aaron.

The fourth time it vibrated, I nearly threw it into the forest, but decided to answer. “Max Long.” But my mental voice added, ‘have you ever heard of voicemail?’

“Mr. Long!” said Blair. “I need help! Two fake cops kidnapped me and tried to kill me! I got away, but I don’t know where I am.”

Crystal whirled to face me, her eyes huge. Damn, she’s got good ears.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Umm. Some giant old ruined house in the middle of the forest. It’s really creepy here, but not as bad as where you found me.”

Holy cow… come to think of it, we were close to Shadow Pines Manor, that abandoned boarding house. It occurred to me that earlier, while in a trance, Sophia had said ‘Shadow Pines.’ But could she have meant this house before Blair even got here? Maybe.

“I know the place,” I said, gripping my phone far harder than necessary. “We’re already close. Be careful, there might be vampires in there.”

“Okay.” The girl made an uneasy noise. “I can’t get out of these handcuffs. After I got away the first time, they put like a cord around my waist. I’m like seriously stuck.”

“It doesn’t matter. You don’t have to fight vampires. Just find a hiding place. We’ll be right there.”

“But I can’t reach doorknobs! And crap, this phone’s about to die!”

“Oh, hey guys,” said Aaron from behind me. “What’s up?”

Shit.

I glanced over my shoulder at Don Larson and Paul Ramirez walking up to us. Neither one of them looked at all normal. In fact, they had the same ‘serial killer’ glint in their eyes Chuck did right before he pulled a gun. That probably happened as soon as they saw me.

“Be there soon.” I spun toward the deputies, raising my left hand in a gesture that bent the wind to my desire.

Don and Paul both went for their guns, but didn’t get them all the way out of their holsters before the hurricane-force air blast hurled them off their feet.

Aaron pointed the shotgun at them and shouted, “Toss the weapons!”

Knowing the deputies wouldn’t listen to him, I beckoned to the earth, hollowing out a pit beneath the two men. Ten feet deep should hold them. Their complete
